The Problem:
Perisher Blue was experiencing severe harmonic problems on their Village 8 Express Chairlift. The 292kW DC motor drive for the chairlift was generating large amounts of harmonics which caused the lighting circuits to trip leaving the ski lift run in the dark for up to 10 minutes while the lights had to cool before being turned on again. This was causing night time skiers inconvenience and potential hazards. A solution needed to found before the start of the 2004 season!
The Solution:
After careful analysis CapTech designed and built a system that reduced the total harmonic voltage distortion from 21% to 8% and reduced the total harmonic current distortion from 29% to 9%. This eliminated the tripping of the lighting circuits and also reduced the current in the system by 226A and improved the power factor. The project management was carried out by Electrical Engineering Equipment (EEE) from their Wollongong office.

The Result :
The customer has significantly improved the quality of his supply and the lighting circuits have not tripped since the installation of the harmonic filter. An additional benefit gained by Perisher was the ability to operate additional snow making machines off the same power supply.
