Bender – A brief history

The origins of the BENDER-company date back to 1936. During that time Walther Hans Bender, the founder of the company, was responsible for the control of electrical systems in coal-mining.

The invention

To check the system it was necessary to stop the extraction. Walther Hans Bender thought a great deal about this problem – and came up with a solution. In Frankfurt/Oder he invented the “ISOMETER®” which enabled him to inspect the installation during operation. In 1939 he received the first patent for the “ISOMETER®”.

The hard times

After World War II the family moved to Grünberg. Being personally confronted with the problems on the labour market, Walther Hans Bender remembered his invention and founded an engineering office. In the basement of his house he manufactured the first “ISOMETER®” for coal mines. This was the beginning of a successful worldwide company.

The breakthrough

Walther Hans Bender offered his product to many large companies – with little response. However in Calor Emag, a company specializing in switchgear for coal mines, he finally found a partner. After this breakthrough the “ISOMETER®” became well known and was then used successfully, in the steel industry, the chemical industry and in power stations – all areas where electrical safety is of paramount importance.

The lawsuit

All of a sudden some big companies of the electronics industry showed interest in the invention.Walther Hans Bender had to take legal action to protect his patent. But with his friend and lawyer Schuhmacher he succeeded in the court proceedings. The little inventor got the better of the big industry. His wife Katrin had helped him from the beginning as a personnel and financial administration manager.

The new era

Christian D. Bender, the inventor’s son, took over the company in 1972, when BENDER had only twenty employees. With the construction of a new company building in Grünberg a new era started: the industrial production of the “ISOMETER®”. A rapid development followed, because Christian D. Bender wanted to conquer the earth: BENDER-technique should provide electrical safety worldwide.Today BENDER is represented in more than 40 countries with over 400 employees.

Family atmosphere and international presence

The patent of the inventor and company founder,Walther Hans Bender, has been the cornerstone. The vision of his son combined with the courage to invest has lead BENDER to a company with extremely high standards. Last but not least, it was the tireless commitment of the employees which allowed BENDER to become an international brand. Now BENDER is a worldwide leader in electrical safety – a development Walther Hans Bender had never dared to dream. But he would be proud today, realising that his company never lost its family atmosphere.
